Keeping your dog in its crate too long is definitely a potential sign of abuse. The maximum duration that a dog should be left alone in his dog crate for is about 5 hours. The exception to this is if you’re going to bed and the dog is going to be sleeping.
If you’re going to be leaving your dog in the crate all day when you’re at work, then you’re abusing the dog. It’s pathetic that dog owners will keep their dog locked up in a crate all day.
Dogs need exercise.
Dogs that do not receive the required amount of exercise will lash out, be unhealthy, and live miserable lives.
I once had someone tell me that they thought it was okay to leave their dog in the dog crate all day because the dog had toys in there. Really? Sure, the dog probably didn’t look unhappy in the crate, but they sure weren’t happy. The dog would much rather be out and about, roaming around and sniffing things.
Think of the back problems that the dog is going to have if it’s locked up in the dog crate all day!
Also, this doesn’t even factor in the strain on the dog’s bladder that this will have. Dogs can hold their pee for a good amount of time, but it’s better if they release it every few hours.
I have also seen people purchase the worst, cheapest dog crates for their puppies. It’s a shame, because the dog will chew through the dog crate like it’s nothing and then get sick or injured. Owning a dog isn’t cheap. If people are going to buy a dog crate, they better get the best large dog crate that they can. It’s not that difficult, nor expensive. It’s certainly cheaper than any vet bills they’d have to pay.
Dog crates are great training tools – but they are not the end all be all place that your dog should reside. Dogs want to be around people, smells, and excitement. They aren’t going to get that if they’re locked in a dog crate all day. The dog may look happy, but it isn’t.
Spread the word and end this abuse.
